Years have passed since the legendary battle of Nepenthe at Riismark, where humanity and the Spires clashed openly for the first time in centuries. Fredrik, king of Brandengrad and de facto ruler of all Riismark, finds himself isolated, his lands besieged on all fronts and abandoned by his peers in the Conclave. To secure at least one front, he honors his family’s debt to the Alchemist of the Tower of Nepenthe. But after driving back the Nordics with the help of the Orders, the Sword Order refuses to relinquish control of the reconquered lands, and Fredrik knows that fulfilling another debt to the Alchemist could paralyze his already strained nation.
