When Napoleon’s armies marched into Spain, they expected a swift and decisive campaign. Instead, the Spanish victory at Bailén in 1808 shocked Europe and delivered the French Empire its first major defeat of the Napoleonic Wars. From that moment onward, Spain became a brutal and exhausting battlefield that drained French manpower for years.
