Sent to reinforce their struggling Italian allies against the British Commonwealth forces in North Africa, the Deutsches Afrika Korps quickly proved to be a formidable enemy. Under the legendary leadership of Erwin Rommel, they fought intense battles across Egypt and Libya, with both sides pushed to the brink. Referred to as the last "Gentleman's War", this campaign was marked by mutual respect between adversaries, whether British, Australian, Indian, or from other Allied nations.
